Safe City Msunduzi NPC officially started its operations on the 1st January 2003 with fifteen cameras. Safe City can be regarded as the brainchild of the late Mr. Des Winship retired Managing Director of Hulamin and then chairman of Business Against Crime who realised that cctv cameras will greatly assist Law Enforcement Agencies in Pietermaritzburg in the combatting of crime and bylaw infringements. The Msunduzi Municipality undertook to fund this project by providing Operational as well as Capital funding and Safe City Msunduzi NPC was formed as a municipal entity.

We steadily added cameras every year thereafter using SAPS crime statistics as our camera placement guidance up and until where we now have 169 cameras. Our project depends on the close partnership with the Msunduzi Municipality, South African Police Service, National Prosecution Authority, Business Fighting Crime and the Community.

We have managed to secure a dedicated court at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court where all our cases are been dealt with. We provided the court with a dedicated TV monitor and DVD player in order to display captured footage.

We are very proud to state that all our Control Room Procedures are ISO 9001:2015 certified an achievement obtained through hard work by our dedicated staff.

Our primary function can be described as, CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT AND FACILITIES FOR CITIZENS AND VISITORS WELLBEING, SAFETY AND LEISURE.
